A Semana Santa em Braga / The Holy Week In Braga

E no Domingoirrompe a alegria!

O Senhor ressuscitou!

As a preferential scenery for experiencing the Passion of Jesus Christ, Braga offers you one of the most comprehensive and interesting manifestations of the Holy Week and Paschal celebrations.

The century old processions of the Passion of Our Lord, and of Our Lord Ecce Homo, together with the Procession of the Burial of Christ or the Procession of the Burrinha (little jenny) are not the only events to build the grandeur of the season. Streets are filled with purple, while the scent of incense pervades the air. The same happens inside the main temples, where ancient practices are still performed.

The Cathedral holds the main celebrations, according to the rule of a liturgical custom that claims identity. At the Congregados Church, swords are withdrawn from the image of Our Lady of Sorrows, pioneer of this devotion in Portugal.

Seven churches exhibit the sepulchre of Our Lord.

And, when Sunday comes, joy fills the air!

The chimes are heard from afar.

Rockets crack in the sky.

Houses with opened doors are a display of spring plentiness.

The Lord has risen!
