Memórias do Restaurante “Costa do Sol” – Lourenço Marques, Moçambique

The restaurant is situated on a tropical beach in front of the Indian Ocean, 9km from the center of Maputo. This family business witnessed the passing of the history of Mozambique from Portuguese colonialism to the country’s independence in 1975 where it was powered by early dogmatic African Socialism through to its eventual maturity and transformation into a democracy under a free market economy.

The foundations of this establishment were placed by the Petrakakis family from its early days (1938) where the family lived, worked and enjoyed its blessings for 75 years – firstly as part of Lourenco Marques which later became Maputo. The city became known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” as well the Paris of southern Africa – a befitting name bestowed to it by many.
